JDK 6.0 released
December 13, 2006 at 11:58 am | In General | Leave a CommentAs expected, Sun has released the newest installment of Java, JDK 6 is now available for download and usage. You can get the latest JDK, JRE etc from here. There is also Netbeans 5.5 bundled version, which fully supports JDK 6, you can download that version too in the link above.
Havent really gotten the time to check out all the new features, but will definetely do so when i have the time. Have heard that there is a big push towards desktop apps and their improvements.
The new and most interesting add on to the JDK6.0 is the JavaDB project a distribution of the Apache derby project under the Apache license. The database is really really small and easy to install. A browser based interface is provided, most likely a push towards the web2.0 applications. Definetely there will be takers and since there is a SUN name attached to it, there is even 24*7 support. A Db completely built in Java will also mean, multi environment portability, easy migration for those undecisive business folks and ofcourse the plug and play usability of java.
Probably it could give MySql and Firebird guys some sleepless nights. I have some friends who have been working onthe derby project at Sun, will try gettign in touch with them and get more info.
